What Does The Hole in The Cap Do?

Nov 21, 2022

Careful wine fans will find that many wine caps will have a small hole or two in them. This is certainly not a process error, but a normal phenomenon, and these small holes have the following uses:

1. Exhaust

When filling the cap of wine, if there is no small hole for exhaust, the air between the cap and the mouth of the bottle will form an air cushion, hinder the drop of the cap and reduce the speed of the assembly line. Moreover, when heating and sealing the wine cap, the residual air will remain in the wine cap, making the wine cap swell and affect the aesthetics.

2. Ventilation

While the cap is meant to protect the cork from excessive oxidation of the wine, proper oxygen can soften the tannins and make the wine softer and more delicate. Therefore, it is still good to pierce a few small holes in the cap and put some oxygen into the bottle.

3. Moisturize

Wine is stored with high requirements for environmental humidity, and a dry environment will cause the cork to shrink, and a large amount of air will enter the bottle, resulting in oxidation of the wine.

Therefore, the wine needs to be stored lying down so that the wine comes into contact with the cork for a long time. But at the other end of the cork, water vapor in the air is also needed for moisturizing, and small holes in the cap can provide a channel for water vapor to enter, keeping the cork moist for a long time.
